Web Site Navigation

The navigation bar on this web site is dynamically created from the list of pages in the site.

Firstly, we used the template management tools to create a template for outputting the list of pages.

Next we load the web site in Container Management mode. A container is a pre-defined area on a page that can hold any number of container rules. We are going to add the Site Map container rule. This is used to output a list of selected pages in a container.

The following screenshot shows the site in container management mode. This mode is only available to users logged-in to the Control Panel.

The main template we use to display the site includes a container called Pages Site Map. This is a global container, which means it is present on every page that uses this template. We now add the Site Map rule to this container.

There are many different options that can be chosen when adding the site map rule. The final option is to choose the display template for the container rule. Here we select the template created earlier in this section.

Now that the site map rule has been added the list of pages is now included on the site. The following screenshot demonstrates how this looks with the site still in container management mode. You can add any number of rules to each container. Additionally, you can change the order of rules in a container, or you can move rules to a different container simply by dragging it.

Finally we close container management mode. The current page will now be reloaded, demonstrating that the site map is now included.
